Call to Action

I want to start by saying that I’m not a political person. Unfortunately with a baby at home I don’t have a great deal of time to keep up to date on all of the political affairs and I don’t have an interest in having political debates. Everyone is entitled to their own views and I don’t want to impose mine on others. Still, there are certain things that make my blood boil. One of those things is what is going on with our food system. If you are new to the term GMO or if you are unaware of what’s going on with our food, please click here to read my post on “Cleaning up our food” or google the term GMO. It is almost impossible to research GMO’s and not read about the Monsanto company. Monsanto is an “agricultural biotechnology company” who is essentially ruining our food system. I recently starting getting newsletters from the Organic Consumers Association and I was skimming the articles today while I was drying my hair. That’s where I came across “The Monsanto Protection Act”. According to their website, “The Monsanto Protection Act, part of the HR 933 continuing resolution, allows Monsanto to override U.S. federal courts on the issue of planting experimental genetically engineered crops all across the country. Even if those experimental crops are found to be extremely dangerous or to cause a runaway crop plague, the U.S. government now has no judicial power to stop them from being planted and harvested.” I had already been disgusted with what our country is allowing to happen to our food system. Everyone, rich or poor, should be entitled to clean, healthy food. We shouldn’t have to pay more for foods without toxic pesticides or to have foods that haven’t been genetically altered and never proven to be safe to eat. But this is completely ridiculous! How is it possible that the U.S. government has given a biotech company free reign over the food that we all eat with no possible repercussions? This is obviously very political. Monsanto has deep pockets, powerful lobbyists, and ties to government officials. I honestly can’t think of one reason why this bill would be beneficial for the American people. I feel such a strong need to do something to help save our food system. Obviously, it is a challenge because we are fighting a billion dollar company. So, what can we do? For starters, sign the petition (click here) started by Roots Action to “Investigate Monsanto’s Takeover of USDA”. Secondly, educate yourself on GMO foods. You can get more information regarding GMO foods by clicking here.  This link will also provide a list of “high risk” crops. Unfortunately to date, products are not mandated to label foods as genetically modified. You will, however, notice many foods that have the “NON GMO” label. Once again, speak with your wallet and look for and buy these products. For the sake of our health and the health of our children, it’s important that we all do what we can to save our food and therefore our health.
