Cleaning up our food

My sister-in-law shared this video with us on Facebook and it’s right down my alley. About 3 years ago  I first read “Skinny Bitch” and it made me curious. I went on to read 6-8 more books on food including “The Food Revolution” by John Robbins which I highly recommend. I was disgusted and outraged by what I learned. The list of ingredients approved as feed for our animals, the growth hormones, and antibiotics used along with the treatment of these creatures caused me to become a vegetarian for about a year and a half. It was also around that time that I started buying organic fruits, vegetables and eggs, stopped drinking milk, and limited other dairy. I started eating meat again shortly before I got pregnant. I try to eat organic now as much as possible and I’m very careful about what I give Brooks. As much as I have learned about food, this video still taught me a lot. The video is about 18 minutes long but it’s definitely worth watching. Some of the highlights that I found interesting:

– 1 out of 17 kids under 3 now have a food allergy

– During the 1990’s new proteins were engineered into our food supply (including bovine growth hormone)

– 27 European countries along with Canada, Australia, Japan, UK, and New Zealand outlawed growth hormone

– The U.S. has the highest rate of cancer in the world

– 1 out of every 2 American men will get cancer

– 1 out of every 3 American women will get cancer

– 1 out of every 8 women has breast cancer

– Of those who develop breast cancer only 1 out of 10 are due to genetics. The other 9 out of 10 breast cancers are caused by environmental factors

These are pretty scary stats. The one thing that I think we can all do is speak with our wallets. I know that organic foods are more expensive but if nothing else buy “the dirty dozen” organic. What’s going on with our food in unacceptable and I agree with Robyn O’Brien, we should all try to do one thing.
